Crane Counterweight: Why It Matters for Your Used Crane

к ChenJinxiang 07 Oct 2026 0 комментарии

A crane counterweight is a heavy mass typically made of cast iron or reinforced concrete, mounted at the rear of truck cranes, all-terrain cranes and tower cranes. For used cranes exported to India, Pakistan and other South Asian markets, the condition of counterweights is one of the most critical inspection points before shipment.

Most crane counterweights feature a modular stackable design. This design lets operators add or remove individual weight blocks based on the actual lifting load, boom extension length and working radius on site. Many construction projects in South Asia have variable site conditions, so flexible adjustment of counterweight is essential for daily lifting jobs.

Counterweights are fitted on the side opposite to the lifted load. They work as balancing mass to counteract the forward tipping force produced when hoisting materials. For second-hand cranes, damaged, cracked or missing counterweight blocks will greatly raise safety risks, so we always fully check counterweight integrity before delivery to our overseas buyers.

How Does the Counterweight Stabilize a Used Crane?

Crane lifting operations follow the fundamental principle of moment balance.

When the boom extends and hoists heavy cargo, the load generates overturning torque. This force pulls the crane’s front down and lifts the tail upward, creating a high risk of tipping over. This hazard is even more important to watch out for on uneven construction sites common across India and Pakistan.

The counterweight creates reverse torque at the crane tail. It shifts the crane’s total center of gravity back into the safe support zone of outriggers.

Simply put: the lifted load tries to tip the crane forward. The counterweight pushes the crane backward, keeping stability during lifting work and full 360-degree slewing. For used cranes, worn counterweights can lose their designed weight, which breaks this balance easily.

4 Core Reasons Counterweight Is Indispensable for Safe Lifting with Used Cranes

  1. Prevent crane tipping accidents Correct counterweight configuration offsets overturning moment. It is the first line of safety defense for lifting operations, especially for used cranes working on infrastructure projects in South Asia.
  2. Match variable working conditions Modular counterweight blocks allow operators to adjust weight according to different lifting tasks, boom lengths and site space. This flexibility fits the diverse project needs of our customers in Pakistan and India.
  3. Protect crane main structure Without proper counterweight, huge overturning force transfers to the boom, chassis and outriggers. This accelerates fatigue damage on used crane frames and shortens service life.
  4. Meet local safety regulations India and Pakistan have site safety rules for mobile cranes. Complete and intact counterweight assemblies help customers pass site inspections smoothly and avoid work shutdowns.

Extra Tip for Our South Asian Buyers

When you purchase a used truck crane or all-terrain crane from us, we will inspect every counterweight block for cracks, deformation and weight loss. We also provide photos and dimension records before loading. If needed, we can supply matching spare counterweight blocks together with your used crane order.
