A crane counterweight is a heavy block mainly made of cast iron or reinforced concrete, installed on the rear side of truck cranes, all-terrain cranes and tower cranes. Most counterweights adopt a modular splicable design, which allows operators to add or remove weight pieces according to lifting weight, boom extension length and working radius. It is placed on the opposite side of the lifted load, acting as balance weight to offset the forward tilting force generated during hoisting.

Crane lifting follows the basic moment balance principle. When the boom stretches out and lifts heavy cargo, the load creates an overturning torque that pulls the front of the crane downward and lifts the tail upward, bringing a high tipping risk. The counterweight applies reverse torque at the rear end, shifting the crane’s overall center of gravity back within the safe supporting range of outriggers. Simply put: the load pulls the crane forward, while the counterweight presses the crane backward to maintain stability during lifting and 360-degree slewing.

Insufficient or mismatched counterweight is the leading cause of crane rollover on job sites. When lifting loads at a large working radius, lacking enough counterbalance will directly lift the crane’s rear chassis off the ground, leading to fatal overturning. Such incidents will destroy expensive equipment, cause casualties and delay the entire construction project.

Every official crane load chart is formulated based on standard counterweight configuration. If you reduce counterweight randomly, the anti-overturning ability drops sharply, and the maximum safe lifting weight will be far lower than the official parameter. Operating under this condition easily triggers hidden overload risks.

Without matched counterweight, the boom, chassis, outriggers and hydraulic system will bear uneven and abnormal stress. Long-term unbalanced hoisting leads to boom deformation, oil pipe rupture, chassis metal fatigue and frequent component failure. For high-altitude hoisting, long-distance radius operation and uneven ground sites, the crane’s safety margin is compressed. Reasonable counterweight layout strengthens wind resistance and anti-slip performance, making the crane adapt to harsh construction environments safely.
